When it comes to creating a website or blog, you are required to have a so called domain. What is domain? Perhaps you know this term in maths when you were a student or perhaps at other fields. In general language, domain means place or territory or land so owned. In the Internet world, you also need this domain to store your blog or website.
Like the places you will find in your country, or smaller in your city, the domain in the Internet world also should have names, or known as Domain Name. Some examples of Domain names are http://blogtemplate4u.com, http://life4biz.com, http://blogspottutorial.com, and so on. In our daily term, domain only represents domain name. Domain name has many variations according to the purposes of the created website. The type of domain is distinguished based on its ending :
- .com ( read: dot com ) : for commercial websites
- .org : for websites of organization
- .info : for websites containing information
- .biz : for business websites
- .gov: for government’s websites
- etc.
There are also domains leading to a particular territory, e.g :
- .us : for websites in the US
- .co.id ( read : dot co dot id ) : for websites in Indonesia
- .cn : for websites in China
- .co.il : for websites in Israel
- .my : for websites in Malaysia
- etc.
However, the fact shows that domain names no longer become the identity, e.g. domains end with .org are used for personal websites, not for organizations, domains end with .info are used for commercial websites, etc.
To buy domain, you can buy it from websites selling the domain names such as name.com, godaddy.com, etc. However, it’s not a permanent purchase meaning that you own the domain forever, but there is limited period, for instance, one year, two years, and so on (usually the price is counted yearly). Perhaps, the right term for this case is not Purchase but Hire, although people prefer to say Purchase to Hire. Anyway, purchase or hire, you have to pay for the domain.
In the domain hierarchy, there is a term called sub domain (part of a domain). Sub domain is created from its main domain as a subdivision. Sub domain can be recognized at how it is written, which is separated by dot (.) from its main domain, e.g. from blogtemplate4u.com, we can create the sub domains such as blog.blogtemplate4u.com, tool.blogtemplate4u.com, etc.
